Dusting off the cobwebs

I haven't visited this blog in a long time. I tend to get very focused on whatever is at hand, and let everything else slide. I've quarantined myself at home today with what feels like a chest cold trying to grab hold, so I'll set aside a few minutes to do a little updating.

I was recently part of a show at Detroit Artists Market entitled "It's Like Toys In Here." The show was curated by Andrew Thompson. Participating artists were myself, Andy Malone and Shaina Kasztelan, with some works by the late Matthew Blake on loan from collectors. We got some nice press: Michael Hodges, Detroit News , Rosie Sharp, Knight Arts, M. Lapham, Detroit Hub. Here's a time lapse video of the opening reception. I'll work on setting up a gallery page with the shadow puppets I made for that show and post it soon.

The Slippery Weasel Society is preparing for a show in Toledo, Ohio in May 2015. We're inducting some new weasels into the sneak. Looking forward to finishing some new work for this show. Check out the Slippery Weasel Society gallery page for a look at what we've done in the past. Thank you to Head Weasel In Charge Matthew Hanna for putting this show together. I'll post a link to information about the show as soon as I can. We're looking into some more shows in the near future. Slippery Weasel Society

I'm working on some small gouache paintings for an upcoming show at Ellen Kayrod Gallery. This is an intergenerational show that includes 21 artists, and is part of the activity in galleries all over Detroit celebrating the DIA's exhibit Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit. The show runs May 1 - June 19, 2015, with an opening reception on Friday, May 8. I'll link to information about the show as it becomes available.

I'm also working on some commissions. I'll set up a gallery page for those as I get them finished.

Let's get this show on the road.

It's taken me a ridiculously long time to build my new web site. Most of that time was spent organizing, editing and uploading images of my work. I just spent an entire day uploading the last of the galleries, and I'm eager to make the site live.

I'm an artist who works in any medium that feels right. I make a lot of soft sculpture, much of it in the form of dolls or puppet-like figures. I also do some drawing, painting and collage. I play around with found objects when it seems like the thing to do.

I also like to play with language. I may decide to blurt a few things out here once in a while. Just one woman howling in the wilderness, nothing to get too excited about. If the mood strikes, I may decide to tell a story once in a while. Feel free to pull up a log and sit by the fire and listen, if you like. I'll try not to bore you with a lot of political screed or excessive complaints. I might occasionally recommend a movie or a book, or share some music that's inspiring me at the moment, or say something nice about a gallery or museum show that excites me.

Feel free to explore the various galleries. You'll find links to galleries under the "More" menu button. I'll add more galleries as I get new work photographed.

Please note that most of the work here has been made over a period of 20 years or more. Much of the work is not currently available for purpose. My purpose here is to create an archive of much of the work I've made over many years as an artist, to give a glimpse of the ideas that have consumed me over the years. Some work is available for purchase. If you're interested in something you see or have any questions, please drop me a line. I'm always willing to talk about my work to anyone who wants to listen. I'm also happy to consider any commissions inspired by what you see. It never hurts to ask.

If I can figure out how to do it, I'll post some links to some other sites where I've posted various notes and missives.

If you like anything you see or read here, go ahead and drop me a line. If you feel the need to get all critical or lodge a complaint go ahead and unburden yourself. I can't promise I'll respond or pay any attention as I'm not much for arguing or listening to random complaints, but you never know. If you're looking for a fight you might get lucky.

I'm a visual artist who occasionally has something to say. This seems like a good place to say it. I've called the blog Waiting for Mary because that seems to be the usual start of affairs around here these days. Also because I love the Pere Ubu song.
